Default Overheating Issues

My c4 just recently started running hot she said. Cruising down the highway it will run about 185-190, but if i sit and idle in town for a while it will see as high as 225+. I was wondering i have checked all the fluids and everything is good. So what all can i check and look for.

225 is normal when you are at idle. I have an 86 that does this too. I'm sure everyone else on here will tell you the same thing. My cooling fan kicks on at 226 and brings the temp back down and then at 208 the fan turns off and it goes back up to 226. It will keep doing this while idling. I don't think I've ever seen mine go above 226.

That it normally runs 185-190 but is now running hotter makes me suspect something is afoot. If the outside temp hasn't gone up, and you're driving in the same types of traffic with the same driving habits as before, then something "under the hood" is causing your temps to rise. The first thing I'd do is check for obstructions in front of the radiator. I get crap up there all the time, especially in the fall when there are a lot of leaves to suck up. It doesn't take much blockage to cause temps to rise.

I have a 92 and mine runs 200 highway and sitting in traffic it will go to 215-230 then the fans come on and back to 200.

I had a similar issue where my running temps were starting to climb also. Turned out to be the thermostat was getting tired and not opening fully causing the temps to creep up.

Of course check for obstructions and debris first then;

Do the basics first, change the stat and do a flush and get the correct stat for a C4 LT1 engine. This is good preventive maintenance anyway and inexpensive.

If all fails, then you can do the radiator for the big bucks.
