I got my '94 back from my mechanic. I had him replace the original 93,000 mile gulpti-barf with a new MSD with the air ventilation mod. Kind of pricey, but i figured if I am going this far with it I want the best.
Also replaced the original water pump with a new AC-Delco. New plugs and wires, also. For some reason the coil wire was nearly burnt in two at the opti boot end. Any ideas how this might happen?
Now the 'vette runs as good as it looks. It's a stock LT1. My next investment will be improving air flow. That's going to have to wait 'till next spring-summer.
I bought the MSD Opti and Ac-Delco water pump off ebay. The sellers are reliable and this is good equipment. There's another e-Bay seller offering a complete OEM package (opti, pump, plugs and wires) for $625. The opti won't have the air tubing installed, but they offer an add-on kit for a little more.
The MSD opti was $430, water pump $150, plugs and wires $100. Labor was around $250.
I have used MSD products on a street Chevelle I owned and I have not had any problems with their products. The MSD will have the vent tube attached and I believe their optical pickup is better.
I'm thinking of doing the same thing, just for insurance against all the horror stories I keep hearing about opti-spark. My car is a 92 which is supposed to be the worst of the opti-spark generations, although at 45K miles it runs just fine.
Did you see any performance-related benefit with the MSD distributor?
I haven't had the cahnce to get it out on the open road. I was starting to have problems with the original opti at 93,000 miles (idle hesitation, stumble on take-off). I do notice the quick engine start and quick acceleration, but I think that would be normal with a tuned LT1. I also had the wires and plugs replaced. So unless I have a coil or alternator or brain go out I should have a trouble free ride.
I have some respect for the MSD line of products. I was using thier cd ignition and coil on a big block Chevelle for 5 years. They do offer a quality engineered product.
