Here is another 'trick' to make it easy. If you are replacing the cover you can do it without removing the shifter **** and boot. Once the cover is loose then from the bottom of the cover use a stubby phillips screwdriver and take out the four screws that hold the 'boot' to the bottom of the plate. Then just lift the cover plate off, leaving the know and boot still on the car. I actually found that easier than the dang C clip.
did the same and then I used some black liquid shoe polish to freshen up the shift boot
