I'm attempting to attach some stainless steel panels under my hood in the cutouts and I need some adhesive help. I would prefer not using a RTV so I'm looking for some thoughts on what else I could use that can withstand the heat.
Sheet metal screws would withstand the heat
They will also discolor at about the same rate as the metal right above the engine
I'm pretty sure sheet metal screws won't work since the panels go between the braces. They might look a little funny sticking out on the outside of the hood....
Shy of space shuttle tile adhesive, I'd be afraid to trust anything but some type of mechanical attachment. Between the heat and flexing, I can't think of an adhesive that would work long term.
Hi John
Silicone wouldn't work? Silicone no likey heat?
Or how about some of the adhesives they use in the constuction industry? We have some stuff here that they call Gorilla glue. Man that stuff is tuff but I don't know how it would take the heat.
Good luck. Now I know what you were talking about when you said some more "bling" for the summer.
Erv Hoerr, former Corvette TransAm racer, has a race parts business. In his catalog, he has a 3M high temp adhesive used to glue the reflective mats near headers. This would work.

First thanks for the replies. I thought I read somewhere that they made a double sided heat resistant tape. Sheet metal screws would be an option but I would have to manuf. a retainer for the panels. Since it's only holding panels (little wt) I thought that it would be easier but...
Bill,
Is this what you're talking about. If so, I may just remove the hood and give it a try.
Yea John, that's it. The only down side for your show application is that it's a contact cement. You have to coat both surfaces, let it dry to a skin and then put the panels in. You won't be able to reposition the panels easily. Also, I don't think you would have to coat the entire panel with adhesive. You could probably use something like 3 one inch stripes. The upside is that with contact cement, you wouldn't have to take the hood off.
If you want to try a cheap experiment, get some Permetix Ultra Black and put one panel on with it. Ultra black is hi temp ( used on oxygen sensors). I used it on the car in my avitar to hold the silver heat barrier on to the fiberglass body. The barrier is one inch from the headers and this stuff has been holding for 2 years.
Good Luck
I've used "Gorilla Glue" in the engine compartment several times amoung other places. Thats my # 1 adhesive recommendation. Excellent hold and works well with heat.
