Speaker covers-not carpet?

Speaker covers-not carpet?

Has anyone used something other than factory installed carpet to cover the speakers? It seems the system would sound a lot better with material and traditional speaker covers. I don't know how it would look or wear.

My '88 does have traditional Bose covers with grill cloth over each of the 4 speakers; the carpet does NOT cover the speaker nor the port openings.

Have your door panels been replaced by a previous owner? Maybe they didn't cut out the speaker holes from the new panels. I'm putting together my new door panels this weekend and that's one of the things I had to do today so I could put my stock speaker covers back on.
