Default Value added question

I just purchased a 1993 Torch Red vette with 14,000 miles. It still has the plastic door sill covers on it that the factory installed. Question is, does it add any value to leave them on? It would look better with the plastic pulled off, but would also allow the carpet to wear in the sill area. What does everyone think? I only plan on driving the car around 3,000 mi per year.

It's kind of like a time warp to have something like that still on the car that was installed at the factory. I would leave them on. If I was looking to purchase a car like that and saw those still on there, it would enhance the value to me. The flip side is that it is your car and you can do what makes you happy. It depends on how long you plan to keep the car. If it was mine, I'd leave them on. They may protect it. Sounds like a nice car.

Please post a pic od this "factory installed" plastic.

Not saying it isn't so, but A LOT of dealers/sellers, now put that plastic covering over floormats, etc., giving the illusion the car is closer to new (than it really is)

Here is a 32k mi Ford, with plastic on the flooring...

If it is anything like that, go ahead and remove it, you can buy more of it off ebay

I could see leaving them on if the car had 50 miles on it, and you were not planning on driving it at all. But with 14k on it and you wanting to drive it 3k a year, I would take lots of pics with them on, then take them off and enjoy the car.
Oh and congrats on a great car. What color interior do you have? Post some pics when you get some.

I left mine on my truck for awhile thinking it would help protect the carpet during the winter months. When I finally removed them, the lettering on the plastic had stained my carpet. Of course my carpet is Gray. I would remove them and just be careful.

Some good points, I never thought about staining the carpet. My interior is tan and black (tan carpet). I only know what I was told about the sill protection being factory, I guess I don't know for sure. I will take some pics and post them. This is my first vette and I don't know a lot about them, what types of things come from the factory etc. I just know that I've wanted one since I was able to know what a car was!!

All the aftermarket dealers sell sill covers. They are inexpensive.

By the time your Corvette increases in value, and at the rate of 3K a year, the plastic will have long since turned yellow and ugly, will have been torn or ripped, and you'll have wondered "Just what was I thinking!!??"

You never buy a car with "resale value" in mind. Do you want to enjoy the car or would you rather have someone else enjoy it? Remove it and drive the hell out of it. Looks as if the original owner wanted you to enjoy it, so do it.

Door sill covers from the factory?
I have bought 2 brand new C-4's, a 95 Lt-1 coupe and my current 96 LT-4 vert. Neither had plastic door sill covers.
I guess it's too late to complain to the dealer.
Whatever you decide to do -- Welcome and enjoy your corvette!

They are not hard plastic, they are plastic sheet and are lightly glued on and have the words "to be removed by dealer" on them. They have already started to thin out and look bad. I will try to post the pictures tomorrow, it's interesting that you bought 2 and they didn't have this protection on them.

I answered your question in post #3 - the rest is best guesses and speculation.

It is a scam to make you feel like the car is newer than it is

You are not buying for collection. Keeping the driving down to 3k/yr might prove difficult after you start driving it! Plan on 5-6k yr!

Yank em. Get nice accent carpets! Enjoy the car. Don't save it for someone else. (But, it's O.K. to take care of it!)

Oh, I dunno. Most new cars don't come to the buyer dirty, don't have plastic on them, anywhere, are clean and washed, etc.. It's called, "dealer prep."

As to your car's plastic on the door sills being original, maybe. Could it add value? As one said, only if you really don't drive the car at all. AT ALL.

As a side note, there are people who buy all different kind of makes, who insist on being at the dealership when the truck rolls up. They also insist that they be present when the car is prepped and that they be allowed to remove the plastic. Or not.

It would seem as if it is possible that whomever owned the car before you may have been one of the above.

I'd be willing to bet that some of them are right here on CF....
