When you take it off and put a blank plate in its place they look like something is missing.
All cars were going to have a passive restraint for the passenger side back when they were designing the 84 corvette dash.
At the last minute Ronald Regan repealed the law and they didn't have to comply with the passive restraint system.
They had already designed the 84 corvette with it, so they went with it, rather than take it off with everything else on the dash being designed to go with the bread box.
Take a look at this post with the pictures that Agent 86 was nice enough to supply. Also I removed a breadbox and when you flip it upside down there is no room, the thing is thick walled.
A while back there was a glove box replacement for the breadbox on ebay. It had the corvette words on the front like the factory, but it folded down to reveal two cup holders and some storage space. I would have bought it had the front of it not been bubbled from heat.

A breadbox that flipped down to reveal the same as above would be pretty neat...

Although this looks congested, if the substructure is removed and an alternate support is fabricated, there is room for a reasonably sized storage compartment. FWIW
Has anyone converted the passenger-side breadbox into a glove compartment? What's involved? Any kits available?
I have a glove box in my 86 like you all are talking about......Got the kit off Ebay about 4 years ago.....Only have seen one other one......There was a Forum member who had a part of a different kit for sale on the Forum several months ago......All it was was the box, not enough to use.......This kit I got was made in California several years back.......I have pictures, but the last time I tried to post a picture here I gave up.......If someone is interested posting them, they can write me at:eanthoney@hot.rr.com and I will send them the pictures and they can post them.......It is a very neat installation and gives you a very handy glove box, but keeps the stock look........
Have a Great Day!!!!!!!!
