I wired up the starter wrong... i had actually shorted the big black cable to ground (i didnt see it while it rested on ground) It was supposed to be on the big pin on the starter. when i hooked the battery up, nothing would turn on and the soleniod started smoking. i hoocked everything up right next, and the starter spins but wont engage, i think. i turned the car off, and jumped the starter w/ a screwdriver and it worked fine.
What do you all think i might have ruined by my first install? the main components on the starter line are the Neutral saftey switch, starter interrupt relay. the crank fuse is not blown.
Are you sure you have it wired correctly. I haven't been inside my starter, but most usually won't engage starter until the pinion gear is thrown out and the contacts in solenoid send power to starter.
Does it sound like there is any contact with ring gear ?
I think the soleniod is good because when the car is (key out) off, I can use a screw driver to jump the "S" terminal to the always hot terminal, this will turn the engine, starter works fine.
I still think there is some kind of short.
The starter ("soleniod relay trigger wire", or "S" terminal) reads 0v when car is off, ~+10v @ ignition on, and ~+12v @ starter on. I disconnected the starter wire from the starter and got the same readings.
I am going to do some more tests and try the screwdriver jump again to double check. Post in about about 2-3 hours. Thanks for all the responses and the starter manual section.
