I've heard that it can be hard on the sprag. I had to have my tranny rebuilt about 6months ago. The sprag went out and took out the valve body and all kinds of other stuff. The rebuild cost me $1400.00.
I'm not saying that down shifting is what caused the problem but, I "used" to do it all the time. I still do occasionally. BTW 108,000mi on orig tranny.
It's highly recommend to "not" do it. Don't get into the habit...not that I don't do it in mine. My next vette will certainly be a manual.
That's the main reason I got the 6spd. Love playing around with the shifting and doing a little engine braking now and then. I like getting on it (in a low gear) on the way to a stop light. Then I just let off the gas and it slows right down. Saves on brakes too!
If the trans is built good enough, there is no good reason not to do it. If its a bone stock trans with alot of miles it wont do it any favours, but then what will?
