Just started getting a small spot of trans oil approx 1"or so in diameter directly below the hole in the inspection cover.
Next question is: Looking for a GOOD corvette auto trans rebulider in Southeasten Chester County, Pa.19363 (Oxford Area)
Don't want to get into removing the trans and sending it away. I'm not equipped to do this, and I don't want to wait too long before I get it rebuilt, (I'm sure that's what we are talking about).
Would like to do a few upgrades as/if required, so I'm looking for some feedback in regards to the Torque converter, shift kit, etc.
There were problems with the 84 transmissions. There was a drain hole behind the front seal that would cause a pressure build up that would push out the seal and the bushing. A mod would prevent it from happening again. If you are making stock power, an 84 trans is ok. They were improved quite a bit on the 88 and newer units.
Making a recommendation on parts and upgrades depends on what you plan to do with the car and how much power you expect to make.
Do not be afraid to search my name here and on www.c4guru.com. I have posted quite a few tips in the past couple of years.
The plan is to keep the car basically stock, but if I'm getting tranny work done for what will be a basically stock machine what should I be looking at?
The part I worry about is who to take it to?
Be sure to install a remanufactured torque converter. It is absolutely nescessary to do the proper job. 84 is a tricky year. Most have 27 spline converters, some have 30 spline units. I would not order the replacement converter until you physically count the spines.
It is also a good time to up the stall a wee bit. Almost free power, considering you are changing it anyway.
Transgo makes the most complete shift kit. It also contains a teflon tv valve and double return spring arrangement. It is slightly expensive, but well worth it
Be sure the shop does the following:
Upgrade the 3-4 pack
Update the pump from 7 vane to 10 vane
pump regulator valve mod
update the 26 element sprag to 29
new lo-roller clutch
new governor gear (regardless of the condition of yours)
pump mod I described earlier
teflon pump bushing
new accumulator springs
I always install a new lock up solenoid and pressure switches on an 84. The pump is different than the later years. This causes the trans to burn up if the lock up fails. You may want to change them regardless
