About 6 months ago I R&R'd the head unit, got the CD fixed, and at the same time yanked the speakers and did the cone refurbishment. Everything came together and sounded GREAT -- up until about a month ago.
I am now getting the "snap, crackle, pop" sound which from my searches would suggest the amps (at least a couple) are shot. But, it only seems to happen when I hit a bump or sometimes in a hard turn.
So, my question, addressed to those who have had to deal with their amps, is -- did your problem start this way, or does it look like I have to do some sort of PITA wire trace?
My speakers used to do the whole snap and crackle thing. I just replaced all the speakers and head unit. It sounds way better then the BOSE system did.
when the amps fail, it's caused mostly by a bad cap on the mother board... so, when you hit a bump, all hell breaks loose.
Bogus is right ! The problem is alas the Circuitry that controls the amplifier! And yes this can suddenly just occur.. followed by whines, squals, shrills and noise I cant describe. Sounds a little like marriage
The bose system in my 91 is completely shot. I'm not interested in paying the $400 to refurb a 16 year old system, so I'm going this weekend to get an estimate for a new system.

Save the old stuff after your done. Somebody here is sure to want it.
You need to have someone ride with you and see WHICH speaker the noise comes from (so you can figure out which amp it is) IF it is coming from ALL four speakers/amps then you may have a bad receiver module or head unit malfunction.
My dad had the same problem with both front speakers in his 92. They would squeal/pop frequently, and it was deafening. If you find out which ones are bad, you can send them directly to Bose for refurbishing (~$75 ea). It wasn't cheap, but now they work like new.
If you're handy with a soldering iron, you could also try replacing the capacitors yourself. Unfortunately, I can't find the instructions at the moment. They probably haven't been posted in a while.
I also had this problem, and went crazy trying to repair it. I finally yanked the whole thing for an aftermarket system. Of course, I saved the old system for when the C-4's are worth $50,000, but for now, I finally can enjoy some music in the car!!!!
