Sunday, I took my console apart to clean the contacts in the electronic climate control. (Working great now) The console was looking mighty sad. Rubber coating was worn off and it was pretty nasty, too. Seeing as how I can't leave things alone... Tell me what you think. (I can take it) Before
After

Red paint base coat, black top coat, wrapped in foil and removed while still wet. It feels a little textured, but I may clearcoat it when I do something about the stereo.
I'm in the process of doing this myself. I was sanding for a good two hours yesterday after work. I stripped off the rubber with carb cleaner. It peels off the rubber coating. If you use too much you get cracks in the plastic. I then sanded with three different grits. First 100, then 220, then 450 wet. It's now extremely smooth and ready for paint. I already bought the paint suggested by another forum member. It is a semi-flat black by Krylon. It is supposed to be a very close match to the facory color but more durable. From the pics I have seen it looks identical. I have the number at home if anyones interested. I havn't decided yet if I should get something for a base coat or if I should seal it with a clear. I'll post pics when it's finally done.

Sorry, mailbox better now. I'll get the numbers when I get home. I should be painting this weekend. I will post picks of the final product. If the member who suggested the paint to me reads this I'd like to know if you used a base coat or a clear coat. I'm thinking the base may not be necessary but maybe a clear. I'm not sure how the clear will effect the fianl appearance/shine. I'm trying to get it to look stock.

i replied to your PM I did not use a clear coat, I think it would affect the apperance of the semi flat, unless you could get a semi flat clear.
it is holding up very well. and is a dead match for the factory rubber coating. all for about 4 bucks
here are a few pics
here is a closer pic of the finish
