I have a 88 with climate control. Still have the same problem with hot air coming the the floor vents only with the unit off, I have cleaned all contacts and this has not help. I was wondering if the heater/air cond check valve could be the problem? If so where is it locaated? (Dash or engine compartment). The air cond needs charging also, could this be a factor with my problem. Any help would be much appreciated
Do not know if a '88 has the identical set up as a '90. Have you searched for codes on your system to indicate the problem?
Are there lights flashing over the control buttons? In the service manual the instruction say to remove fuse #1 and I believe #17 which will reset your system. Read the manual first. However, not much will happen until you have the proper amount of freon or whatever gas (if you have converted to the new gas) your running in the A/C.
Default setting/normal - as long as the blower isn't running - if the blower is running, that's a different issue. The heater door on this Year is never fully shut and a small amount is going to come through those ducts - and the defrost - with it off. Part of it is to keep you from suffocating - part of it is simply the design. If you want to see if you can improve on it, you may have to dig into the heater plenum. Not hard once the Dash is out of the way. Otherwise, start at the door itself. Remove the Driver's side hush panel and if you lay down on your back and look up and to the left, you'll see the vacuum solenoids that control the doors. You want the one with the pink hose. Try pulling/pushing on the arm and see if you can't get it to shut a little bit more.
Other possibilities include a poorly sealed evaporator box or possibly cowl damage if it's been smacked in the front or side. For the evaporator box, put the blower on high and if you can feel air anywhere where it meets the firewall, seal it up.
The Factory put a foam filter on the inlet side of the evaporator which falls apart if it's leaking gas. Some foam may have lodged between the door and the plenum. If it hasn't blown out, it's probably wedged in there pretty good, so taking it apart might be the only solution.
There aren't many codes prior to '90 and none of them have anything to do with vent position, the blower motor or whether or not there's any refrigerant in it.
