Default oil change/filter

Hi, I am a 1st time owner of a Corvette, '92 vintage, so please don't flay me too badly. The current owner just changed the oil with Mobil 1, so probably less than 50 miles it. However, he used the dreaded Fram filter. Can I change the filter without losing all the oil? If I have to drain the oil first I'm assuming I can re-use the oil as long as I catch it in a clean container. Flay away. Thanks, Larry

Just remove the filter, and replace with the brand your comfortable with. It should be a quart or less, restart the car, shut off, check the level, and fill until reads full on the dipstick.

Don't over fill, best methoud is to remove filter, then fill the filter with oil before installation.... install, run to opp temp and check, should be the same as when you started.

Remove the offending Fram filter and toss it. When you install the new filter, simply pour oil into the new filter before installing it. You should be able to get almost a half-quart into it by pouring slowly and then letting it sit for 10 seconds and then add more.

This way, you will have a nearly full filter when the motor starts.

You won't have to add much more oil at all after you install the filter and start the motor.

Considering the prev owner has probably been using Fram filters for the past 50K+ miles, I'd just leave it on there until the next oil change. But the advice above is good also

Also, Corvette Kid was born yesterday.

with the above. I always prefill my filters. As stated, you'll get almost a half qt. in this one. Put the rest of that half a qt. in the engine and you'll be right, guaranteed. Then you'll have a half qt. left and only have to buy four more for the next oil change. Welcome to the brotherhood!

I would agree with all of the above, and recommend replacing Fram filter with K&N Filter HP-2001...Welcome to C4 land!

I agree Fram Filters are not the best but I think it's a waste of time to change it now. Do it on your next change and maybe a little earlier than you would normally.

Pardon my ignorance here but.......

What is so bad about a fram that would warrant immediate replacement?
I am new here and don't know the history on this topic.

There are studies(?) that show Fram has the lowest build quality when compared to the remainder of the filter population. I won't use a Fram filter but I have no personal or second hand knowledge of anyone having a major problem with one. I am confident Fram wouldn't sell a filter that is unsafe to use. Like I said, I won't buy one but in Larrys position I would't change just for the sake of changing.

I just wonder how Allied Signal can still be in business.

I doubt it, I use Pure 1 now, but unless you beat on your car really hard I think the new Fram filter is fine. They don't have the cardboard end cap in the new model.

I certainly wish you luck. If you were involved in the first hand problems that I was a part of, you opinion would be similar to mine.
I never have a negative opinion of any product that I have been succesful with, so I fully understand your view.

I use Fram "Sure Grip" and it seems fine to be. If it wasnt safe then it wouldnt be on the market.
