I'm driving home the 91 and the radio blinks on and off then the batterylight comes on, the dash goes out, it runs like s^&t, get it off the freeway.
pop the hood and the neg. battery terminal is loose. borrow a wrench and tighten it up, get a jump, starts right up but battery gauge doesn't come up, and it dies.
almost no tools, no manual. could I have blown a fuse also? alt. gone? what?
Measure the battery voltage, you can tell the state of charge, 12.0 volts and below, discharged, so charge it up with a battery charger. 12.9 volts and above, fully charged and linear in between. If it is stuck somewhere, get a jump, but jump for 5 minutes (jumper car engine running) so the battery can be charged up enough for an easy start and the battery will have enough charge that your alternator can keep the car running. If your red battery symbol light on the dash comes on, you have a dead alternator and you won't go far, replace the alternator.
Sears can run a test on the charging system and battery condition. I do it when I have to. Usually the battery is toast but can also be something else.......like the alternator. You don't have to have them repair it but you'll get the answer and it's not very expensive.
