Hi all , i have a 96 with 15000 miles on. i really wanted a 6 speed but the car was just to clean to pass up,[anyway] will changing the converter and rear gears make this car more exciting to drive? it is completly stock and i want to drop about $2500 in to it. what exacly does performance axle ratio mean?

performance axle ratio means you have a lower(numerically)gear ratio to improve acceleration(torque multiplication actually).i would try to find a 3.45 or 3.54 gearset for a D36(your rear end) and a 2800 stall converter.it will drive like a whole new car.as stated you can run up to a 3.73 gear with no problems.might be a tad much gear for a stock motor but it will be fine if you don't do alot of highway driving.if so your mileage will take a good hit.
A performance converter is definately a good way to add "bang for the buck".
I have hooked up quite a few members with nice 9.5 inch higher stall converters. They are 14 pounds lighter than stock and work pretty well. I have a new one for myself sitting on my bench
My '85 has 3.07 gears and a 2400 stall converter. It launches just as hard as a stick if not even better. Lets just say at the strip if the other guy misses a shift i'd win

A converter and rear gears will make it an entirely different car
O.K. so it will be the same car but it will feel like it picked up 100 horses. I got a 2800 from Pete K and am running a 3.75 rear. Gears, converter and tires and it's a 12 second car all day long.

Really? I had no idea that just gears a converter could shave 2 seconds off the 1/4 mile. Sounds like I need to upgrade them some more
G44 is the 3.07 ratio code
G92 is the generic performance code, it doesn't tell you sht except it is the "performance" axle, kinda like C4 tech. It leads you to a path but doesn't help you out until about the 20th post.
GM1 is the 2.59 ratio code

Here we go, a LT1 is a completely different animal from the L98.
A stock LT1 runs mid 13's mine with the A4 and the 2.59's ran 13.50's
and some guys have gone quicker. Mojo was in the 13.20's with his.
So pick up two full seconds NO !!!!!!!! Pick up 8/10th's no problem. Mojo's car is going 12.50's with a STOCK LT1 ENGINE and a 3.5X gear, 2800 tc.
My best pass is a 12.77
