For running the 1/4 I've experimented with both leaving it in drive and launching at 1,200 rpm and launching in 2nd, again launching at 1,200 but then shifting into drive 2/3rd down the track (at about 5,500 rpm just before the rev limiter kicks in).

I've found I'm quicker everytime with launching in 2nd

You are not launching in second, the car will LAUNCH in first gear no matter if you put it in first, second, drive or overdirve.

Leave it in drive

Leave it in OD for most driving. If I am running some really twisty backroads I might use 2nd or regular D for better control and easier on the brakes.

you are putting a considerable strain on the transmission when you downshift to brake the car. your best bet is to just leave it in drive

I don't downshift. Start out in 2nd or D and keep it there. Better than having it constantly shifting gears as I run thru 'twisties'.

At the drag strip, put it in D (3rd), not OD...let the car shift itself...don't forget to turn off the ASR...
