Default '91 LCD display problem

HI,

I was recently driving my '91 vette on a little road trip and when I was going over a bumpy road, the LCD started acting up. What it is doing is some parts of it are partially displayed when those parts shouldn't be and the opposite is also happening (parts are not displaying when they should be). This is only happening in the speedometer area and the fuel mileage / fuel gage area. For example, I have some LCD segments missing on the MPH readout and have a notch or two missing or really dim on the LCD gas gauge part.

I'm looking for ideas on what could be wrong. The FSM points to maybe a grounding issue. I was curious if anyone else ran into a similar issue to this and what they did to correct it. Could the whole LCD part be going bad? I do know that this car seems to have some weird electrical issues regarding the key buzzer and VATS.

Also, how painful is the dash to remove in this thing. The FSM shows that it's a pretty big thing to remove the dash. I have removed a dash from a '86 vette and that was pretty easy, but I fear that this will be much harder.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Micah

Default 91 LCD problem

Check in the tech article section, I believe someone posted a how to in regards to a loose connection going to the LCD.
I recently had the same problem with my LCD displaying random numbers and such. After going through all the circuits and checking for continuity in each, then following the FSM and sending out the cluster for repair. I talked to Gordon Killebrew when all other options had been exhausted, he told me to check for a loose ground from the ignition coil. Problem solved, how I hate electrical stuff.

I had the same exact problem, and found that the ignition coil was not grounded properly. If your lcd display is displaying random numbers...and you recently changed out the coil, I'd definitely check into it.

Thanks everyone. I will check out the ignition coil.

I do know that sometimes the key buzzer intermittently works when the key is in the lock cylinder. Maybe it's all tied together.

Hi everyone...really stupid question. Where is the ground wire for the ignition coil to check it out? Is this wire near the distributor?

Thanks in advance.
