Pits are illegal in many states due to fumes and the possibility for cave-ins. I would check with your local building inspector's office first. I would go with a nice drive-on lift.

Be careful because some insurance companys won't insure you with a pit beacuse they have had problems with fies in them

The lift is the way to go (I live in Minnesota it gets plenty cold here)

89sleeper,

Did you do some funky business with you garage door tracks and spring to get the car up that high so close to the opening?

Yes I had a overhead door guy change the door springs and he also added a 12 inch piece to the track now the door hugs the bottom of the rafters
