Failed the AZ DOT Emissions Testing today. Only Mod done to the vehilce is a catback exhaust system, consisting of an X/H - pipe and Dynomax Mufflers. She is a 1992 with only 31,500 miles on her.
Test results were:
Hydrocarbons (HC) in grams/mile:
vehicle: 3.60
standard: 1.0
Result: Failed
Wow, you are way off. I have a complete LT1 system, but are you sure someone didn't gut (or remove) the cats? Are you showing a check engine light? Is it running rough?
I'm in Mesa, AZ & failed twice. Time was running out & I couldn't work on the car before the tags expired. Took it to Exotic Muscle in Tempe, they made some adjustments, etc., then I passed. Their number in Tempe is 480-967-4222. Ask for Merle or Trevor. Good luck to you.
I do have a check engine light. It comes on, then goes out. Never steady. Car runs great, not rough or anything. Just had the 30,000 mile check/tune up done on it. No issues
What's the codes on the check engine light. Take a paper clip and short the two top right pins on the adl connector, or go to Autozone and they will read the codes for you.
The catback exhaust has nothing to do with failing, address your DTC first, that may do the trick. Seat of the pants "running good" means little because they often run great when rich, good luck.
After looking into the codes and so forth, i did come up with a code 43, which is a knock sensor. Checked the resistance of the sensor and all was good. Cleaned the connection with electrical cleaner and check engine light when away.
Re-took the emissions test and Failed a second time.
HOLD ON TO YOUR SEATS....
Finally i decided to take it to a mechanic. 1.5 hours and a 130.00 dollars later the mechanic tells me she's is running like a fine tuned kitten. He asks me two questions; what testing facility did i use and was it a young person performing the test or an older person?
After answering his two questions, we take it to the same testing facility. The mechanic kindly asks for a manager. The manager, a female, says she will run the car thru the test.
I PASS with flying colors.
Appartently, you can mis-drive a standard shift vehicle to make it fail. I am currently trying to recoup my 130.00 from the state of AZ
Thanks for the update, seems that many who post looking for help forget to follow up after the problem is resolved. Happy to hear you passed, best of luck recovering your unnecessary "repair" expense.
Kudos to the technician who figured it out, many would have wasted more money throwing parts at a problem that never existed.
It can make a difference.
Years ago a friend took his new Nissan to a test station in LA Ca.
I went with him, he said its a new car it will pass. It didn't.
At the exit door this guy comes up with a flyer, that says, 2 blocks down on the right we'll get it to pass.
The folks in the area rented every garage within 2 miles to install test machines in.
There were more cars being tuned to pass in a backyard garage than in the state test facility.
$35.00 later back in line and the new car passed.
What a racket.
Its been said that in the next 10-20 years 1/3 of all the air pollution
in California will be from China.
It isn't dirty cars thats ruining the planet its over population.
