Default A/C Question

96 LT1 vert, 43,000 miles. My A/C blow cold air, no problem. Problem is my controls are the electronic controls and the following buttions work intermitently, auto and temp down. All the other controls work fine and the two listed above will work sometimes and sometimes they won't work. Any suggestions?

The only reference I can give is when I had a similar unit in an early 80's Cadillac. I bought a control unit on eBay for like $20 bucks or something. It really could be that there is a build up of crud in the inner working of the switch, which a good contact cleaner (you can get at Radio Shack) would probably remove. Or the inner workings of those two buttons could be shot. For me it was easier replacing the unit. When they don't work, is it humid out? Moisture can cause dendrites (tiny little metal crystals) to grow between conductors causing a short that comes and goes because the metal crystals are so small they break and regrow.

Then you could try the contact cleaner (it's an aerosol spray) or maybe someone else will have better advice.

I have the same problem with the same 2 buttons. I found that if you hit it hard enough they start working again so my guess is the contacts are bad.

I had a similiar problem on my 96 LT1 when I bought it. I figuered the control box was bad, so I ordered a new one from Eckler's ($180). When I took the dash out and installed the new one, everything worked fine.

Then, I took the control box apart and found that one of the control boards was loose. That was the real problem. The reason I didn't do this at the first was I thought the control box would be a lot harder to work on than it was. I wanted to get the dash back together as fast as possible. And I figured $180 for a new control box was a bargin. So now I have spare, and that' OK!
