Default mobile one?

Hi, I am new to the forum, but not new to Vettes. My latest 1994 says that I should use 5w-30 Mobile one oil? Should I use this oil only??

Oil technology has moved on since 1994.
Any fully synthetic oil on the shelf today (even Private brands) are higher quality than Mobil 1 was in 94 (SH).

http://www.aa1car.com/library/API_ratings.pdf

Find a fully synthetic motor oil from a Brand you trust and can afford... and you will be in better shape than the origianl owner with Mobil 1.

Look for a name brand full synthetic oil that meets or exceeds the GM 4718M standard. I buy Mobil-1 simply because that is what GM started with in 1992 when the LT1 was introduced. There are other oils that show they meet the GM standard and they should be fine.

But not that some of these oils may be a synthetic blend and they would contain some dino oil. I still use the "Full Synthetic" 5W-30 and I don't bother with the extended life stuff.

As far as the viscosity is concerned, you could go with 10W-30 as an alternate but for most temperature ranges, the 5W-30 will be fine.

Mobil-1 is available in 5-quart jugs at Wal-Mart for about $24 and is about the cheapest price around. Most places want around $6 per individual quart jug.

Use that as your guide and you won't go wrong.

No, the Corvette doesn't NEED a full synthetic oil any more than your 1973 Chevy pickup needs synthetic. But it IS the best.
The best is only a few dollars more. A lot of us believe it's worth it.

A lot of people run regular gas in their LT-1's, and you'll probably noticel more difference from premium than you ever will from synthetic motor oil.

i used mobil 1 in my last oil change. however i know a lot of vette drivers around me in georgia that say Amsoil at the mention of oil. They live by it, ive also heard Royal Purple and Redline are high quality. In my opinion i would want to use something that will protect and prolong the life of my corvette.

I bought the five-quart, convenience-sized jug in Louisville for that same price. It was during a July 4th sale. I just changed my oil/filter last week.

Castrol has a dino-blended Syntec oil, too. Did you ever try it?

Just don't be lulled into a false sense of security with the synthetic oil. All oils are lubricants, cooling agents, and a suspension media for dirt and other small particles.

Even if you are going to go longer without changing the oil, changing the filter cannot be ignored.

Any of the good quality synthetics MAY be good for up to 15k miles if you believe their claims, and I'm not saying I don't, but a filter change is a MUST every 3-5k miles to keep filtering properly.

I use Mobil1, and change it and the filter (I use Purolator's Pure One) every 4-5k miles or 6 months. Small price to pay for peace of mind in my book.

I run Mobil 1 and the A/C Delco PF-52 filter until the ECM lights the CHANGE OIL lamp on my dash.

Your car used dino oil from factory.
The thing I heard if you start using synthetic oil in a engine that use dino oil to start I heard it could cause real problems.

Not really sure of the problems it could cause but its something I heard in the pass.

Maybe a member can chime in and give the facts

Just wanted to give you a heads up.

I change oil /filter once a year regardless of mileage. Will use any oil that has the 4718m cert on it.

Congrats on your latest Vette purchase.

I suspect that your owner's manual actually says to use an oil meeting GM Standard 4718M as does the manual for my 02 Z06. My manual states that Mobil 1 meets this spec (it does but note that the newer Mobil 1 Extended Performance does not), but that use of this oil isn't required.

As mentioned above, many synthetics on the market are labeled to meet or exceed this GM Standard. Use anyone and you'll likely be fine.
My recommendation for your car is the AMSOIL SAE Synthetic 5w30
