Default Top speed

Someone asked me the other day about the top speed of my car, anyone know, it's an 1989 base coupe.

I think I read somewhere that when the first C4s came out they were the fastest production cars in the country with a top speed of 150mph. If this is true I would think that the 89 would be a bit faster since it has more horsepower than the 84.

About 150 to 155 mph, but it would take a long time to get up there. The 1984s topped out at between 135 to 145. All L98s are in the 150 to 155 range ...

For 15 and over year old cars, that is quick. Wow. V6 stock mustangs in the early 2000 models only top out at 110. Thats as far as the speedometer goes.

My bone stock 89 auto would do 154 but no more. But it could sustain it.

84 can't do anywhere near 150. My 85 can barely do 150. I think the 84s topped out in the mid 130s.

Nowhere around here to do it. Ive only had it to 130 or so, wasnt even breathing hard. I know "someone else here" who has had it to 168 with more to spare.

Back in the day...
When my car was almost stock ( few mods, cut lid, exhaust, the usual cheap starter stuff) I had the car up to 161.

Now keep in mind, this was a clear, sunny, cool, autum day, in Indiana where the road was long, straight, and F-L-A-T....

IIRC,
Lt1/Lt4, I believe, is in the 165 range.
ZR1 is about 175-180.

What year is your car, and what gear and tire size were you running? Sure your speedo is 100% accurate? I think 161 hp takes a little more juice than these things come with.

His is a 1988. I bet he did do it with those mods since his car is newer

Speedos aren't accurate enough for differences of a few MPH.

We're talking about the top speed of the cars when they were new, right?

Most of our old tanks are pretty old and tired....and could easily lose 5-10mph off the top speed of a new unit.

Any hi-mileage L98 that can hit 150 is doing pretty good, I'd say.

I know when my vette was new my mom took it to a closed course and got it up to 140. Right now its top speed is about three mph if I find a hill and give it a good push.

Does it really matter? I'm sure most people never hit the top speed in their cars, let alone corvettes. The only thing i've ever hit top speed in was my '77 C10 cause it was only 85 mph
