87 89 91? I remember a time when it was 110 or nothing.
110 is red, the shizt they sell now looks like water, but it doesn't need lead to contain the burn rate.

Premium is a racket, it all comes in the same tanker, at the same time, from the same fuel depot.
Yes indeed, but once the tanker gets to the Gas stations they
start filling each of the tanks with the SAME gas !!!!
and after they fill each tank the driver ADDS a different dissolveable
packet of octane booster for each tank! eg. 87-89 and so on
That;s the way they used to do it before, I think they still
do it that way.

my .02
I use the premium around here it is on average 20 cents more a gallon.
So for the price of 2 drafts at most 4.00 if you put in 20 gallons. I prefer the hi test .
This way I can keep the big smile on my face when I stomp on the gas!

Default gas

I have an 86E. flat top pistons. I used to have cast iron heads. I put 113 heads on it, and my compression jumped from 9.5 :1 to 10.2:1 and I run 91.
sometimes I mix the fuel, and put mid grade gas in with premium.
can't tell the difference. I figure that with the mixed gas, with the aluminum heads my car runs as it should. I don't hear any pinging, but with the mufflers I have, I can't hear the radio either

Not really, Those tankers have divided sections for each grade.
I don't know what the previous owner used in my LT4, but when I got it I started using Chevron premium in it. I've kept records of all my fill-ups so I know when things get better or change for the worse. Right away it started running better and geting better gas mileage too. No changes, just good gas instead of bargan bangwater. That Techron really does clean things up and make them run better. I think for a long flat highway drive, the middle grade would be OK as long as you didn't try to get too squirley, but it's just a few cents difference for a tank, so what the heck. If it goes farther and runs better with the higher grade, I think you're getting more for your money than you'd save by cheaping out on the nickle a gallon difference. The LT4 has a little more squeeze in the chamber than the LT1 too, so I'll run the good stuff for the piece of mind.

I was running 89 in my 93 LT1 when doing a scan a little while back and got real low knock counts, about 500 with startup and about a 45 minute drive. I see no reason to go higher than the 89. I have not tried 87 yet but with as low as the counts I had I am willing to bet it would not be too bad.

By why would you freaking want your car to adjust to 87???

It's a vette, not a school bus.

I drive a vette, it looks cool, but I intentionally retard performance because I want to save a few bucks????

Com' on guys!

I'm just going with what the manual indicates on mine, if I remember correctly the '85 with iron heads had lower compression then the later l98's with aluminum heads, 9.0:1 versus 9.5:1 or something like that I could be wrong I'm pulling those numbers off the top of my head. The manual for a later l98 could definitely indicate a higher octane rating.
