Default Sagging top liner

The quality (sarcastic) felt top liner has started to sag. I am sure I am not the only one who has had this experience so any suggestions on the proper (or otherwise) way to fix?

Hey fellow DFWer!

I just fixed this same problem on mine. Easy fix.

Go to your local auto parts store and buy some headliner adhesive (like 3M spray, or others).

With the top of and laying on something soft (so not to scratch the paint), carefully pry off the cardboard backing. It is glued to the fiberglass top. Try not to bend the cardboard. Using a thin scrapper may help. Take your time & be gentle with it.

Once the cardboard is seperated from the top, you should be able to pull off the black fabric. Have a vacum handy, cuz a lot of the old adhesive, which is now powder/dust will get all over the place - in my case, it was all over the living room floor.

Hopefully the fabric is in good shape. If so, clean it good (with the vacum) as well as the cardboard. Use the adheasive to glue the fabric back on the cardboard - make sure it is nice and tight. (if your fabric is ripped, just go to a fabric shop and buy a new piece).

Once dry, you are ready to place the cardboard(with the fabric on it) now back into the fiberglass top. Someone here on CF suggested instead of gluing it back in, to use velcro. I did that, and worked out great.

Let us know how it turns out!

Thanks for the great tips. On the velcro did you do this around the entire perimeter or just corners? Thanks for your help.

Yeah, I just picked up some big pieces of velcro over at Home Depot/Lowes, and put them in the corners.

Before you apply the velcro, test fit the cardboard (with the fabric glued on it) in the top - you'll notice it's gonna be a tight fit - and would probably stay put on its own. I was considering not even putting anything in there, but I figure to be safe (and hate for it to fall down on my head as I was driving!), velcro would be a good, safe measure.

I got tired of the heat dropping my headliner so I had it done in leather at an interior shop. Been sag free for 7 years + - a year.
