On my '88 C4 Im about to change the spark plug wires. My ? is in the haynes manual theres a diagram with the layout of thr cylinders and what number each is. Theres also a pic of a distributor and it says the blackened terminal is the number one spark plug wire position and theres an arrow going clockwise. Im assuming that since its going clockwise that its in order starting with the number one sp position? As in 1-2-3 and so on around clockwise til ur at 8?
Wow, thanks for the help. Ya know I actually did a search for spark plug wire positions and nothing helpful came up. Whatever happened to people who actually had the answers to ppls questions replying instead of being a!!holes and always saying try the search??
If you happen to know the answer Id appreciate the input if not then dont reply

wow, thats no way to make friends, however, sometimes the search makes you very confused, esp, if your a newbie like me.
Outta curiosity what would happen if the spark plug positionin was wrong and someone tried to start the car? Would any damage be done??
It depends on where the valves are. A bit of predetonation can destroy an engine. But if the spark is way out of phase then probably nothing too bad if anything would happen.
Ok gotcha.
By old setup do you mean as in an older car? Is there any difference between that and the hei setup besides the fact that their positioned differently?

Yes I meant in the out moded points and condensor ignition system vs the newer HEI system. For the purposes of the diagram that I found there is no other difference.
If you save the picture, then view at a larger size, it may be easier to read. I wouldn't worry about asking questions, everyone has to start somewhere and not all are familiar with the ins and out of this bulletin board.
Yeah but depending on the position and condition of the clips, that can be a pain in the neck with the factory routing, I couldn't get my beefy hands to the factory clips doing it one wire at a time.

Remove the fender panels for easier access to the wire holders/separators next time. They're held in place with 10 mm bolts.

I probably will next time, of course I found that advice after I had bloody knuckles Even doing that I still label each wire with its cylinder number with masking tape. Takes five seconds a wire, pulls off quickly and stays out of the way. Of course I'm one of those nuts who has labels on every damn bolt and piece I touch. That way I know what the big pile of "extras" I have in my garage is after I reassemble everything.
