How hard is it to change the trans filter, other the fact it's hard to get under. The transmission keeps shifting from o/d to third and back to o/d, and back to third at highway speeds at even throttle, wondering if the filter might be clogged up. By the way this is a 1989 coupe, 700R transmission. Hope it's the filter, and not the transmission, already checked all the linkages, looked fine, any help would appereciated.
It's pretty easy IMO. If your careful when you lower the pan you won't make a mess. I pour it into a large drain pan. Then pull the filter out making sure the orange round gasket at the end comes out to as there is usually a new one on the new filter.
Have you reset the TV cable? Are you sure it's shifting gears and is not the torque converter locking up and unlocking? An easy way to tell if it's the convertor is to lightly press the brake, you will feel it shift as it unlocks and RPM will go slightly up. Mine had troubles and I had to drop the valve body and clean it.

First change your filter, sound s like you havn't done it since you bought it.
If you want to do it yourself,it's not that hard,it's just messy, but you can minimize that. The old filter just pulls off,and the new one pushes on.
You don't need a FSM to do this.Just be careful about reinstalling all the bolts, start them by hand, don't get them crossthreaded!
Next adjust your TV cable, that you will need a FSM to do,or someone here that can walk you through it,I'm lousy at that.Good luck, and I hope that's all it is.
Having fiter changed tomorrow, and reset tv cable, hope I't solves my problem. Is the transmission tied in with the brake switch ? Last time I drove the car at 50 mph the converter would unlocklike it was supposed to, and would lock back up as soon as I released the brake.

Yes, there is a TCC (Torque Converter Clutch?) switch intergrated with the cruise vacuum release switch mounted on the brake pedal. It's adjustable.
At that speed (50mph) you should see a 100rpm jump when you barely tap the brake pedal. This tells you that the switch is adjusted properly, and that it released the TCC when the brake was applied. If not, you need to adjust it.
The adjustment can be disturbed if anyone was under the dash, or for a brake booster install for example.
Just changed filter, done a road test, transmission shifted much better, but converter still locking and unlocking, just not as bad as before. Will try to reset the TV cable next, sure hope that fixes it. Thanks tou guys for all your help.
