Had the same issue. The spring is kind of a modified C spring, not really an S. The spring lays with the thin side against the lid so that the button, when pressed in, will compress the C and be pushed back out by the C returning to shape. When the C spring is on it's side, it has about the same thickness as the button.

Hope that helps.

SO does it hook into the button or just lay behind it? Round side towards the lid or the box?

Just lays behind it. Round side toward the button, the curled ends work into the small molded pieces of the top. If you look down on the top of the lid, you would see the square of the button, and the thin side of the spring, kind of a C.
