I too installed an open airbox and a K&N on my Ruby. It was a mixed
blessing however. Yes it pulls stronger -- but now I have to keep cleaning
the rice from my air intake...
Its funny how often somebody is bashing these little mods but then most use them anyway even with their moderately or highly modded engines. So in some stage they must work?
It is probably true that one cannot feel much of a difference when doing just one of these but the whole could make a huge difference together. I have seen all of these said to be more or less useless during the time I have followed the Forum:
- airfoil
- K&N
- open lid
- forced air whatever
- chip
- AFR
- spark plug electrode mod
- frisbee
- better than stock ignition parts
- DIY intake porting
- bigger throttle body
- bigger injectors
- headers
- cats and other exhaust parts
Please give everybody a change to be happy with their mods no matter how small they are and even if you had no luck with the particular mod yourself. Your personal experience does not make it absolute truth. Some cars react differently to some mods than others. Also if your azz is accustomed to sense how >400hp engines react to major mods you might not feel some minor change equally well.
Part of the fun in this hobby is to mod the xxx out of our cars. Somebody go high $ route and other choose some other way to do this but all have same goal: to make oneself feel better about our cars.
I don't think anyone means to bash mods. All that we ask is that the scientific method be used. That's really not too much to ask. Just look it up in your encyclopedia.
Now an "airfoil" for instance may or not work to impove a L98. But please when it's mentioned lets really measure what it does in terms of performance. We should also be aware of the "cost" of a mod. In the case of a open lid there is the increased chance of water entering the engine. This is seems to be fogotten when it's mentioned. Now it's common knowledge that the L98 can be improved by breathing improvments. That's what a LT-1 is! However when other changes are made and the improvement is attributed to a open lid thats just not scientific.
You have to admit that whenever an engine is modified (cam, roller rockers, intake, tb, exhuast, or all of the above and a few more) it WILL get more benefit from increased air flow, therefore a stock engine won't notice as much of a gain with the air lid, whereas a modified engine will see more gain. It makes sense to me. Am I blowing hot air
I'm not bashing anyone, I'm just being realistic. I didn't see a gain at the track and you can't "feel" a gain either. You do a mod and you expect a difference and sometimes your brain makes you think you feel a difference.
I don't think a dyno run would show any difference since the car would be sitting still.
While it makes sense that you would be flowing more air, I've run at the track with the stock filter and lid, then stock lid no filter, then no lid, no filter, old filter open lid, clean filter and open lid. The one thing that would have made any difference is the clean filter. If you look at the times in my sig, you will see a difference of .08 seconds. That's it, and you can't "feel" that.
