I just tuned up my 89 this week, new rapid fires, Taylor Blues, Delco Dist. cap and rotor, fuel filter and cleaned and oiled my K&N air filter and I must say it ran much better and a bit quicker. Then today I received a stock air lid I bought off a fellow Forum user and cut it open and put it in place of the stock original lid and I have to say I found a big difference!! Damn this car never ever accelerated like it does now, at WOT the rear end squats and front comes up bigtime, more then it ever did before and I noticed it doesn't run out of breathe nearly as soon as it use too.... I really wasn't expecting this big of a difference... I read some threads here before where guys said they didn't feel any difference after they opened their lids but man I certainly do!!!
I did it in mine, and I didn't feel much of a difference. Maybe a little bit on the highway but nothing tremendous. Now when I do the gears next season, then we should feel something
I changed the air in my tires and it rides so much better now.
You changed so many things! Then you did not measure it! It's just a feeling you have.
Look up the scientific method and read it.
I was going to get a paper air filter and compare it to the K&N filters for acceleration using the GTech but it's so much trouble. But I do have the data here on 15,000 miles of getting way too much sand (silicon) into the engine oil using that K&N. It's time to buy that paper filter.
It's all in your head, I have hundreds of runs with the stock lid and hundreds with the open lid= no difference, just the filter gets dirtier quicker.
I disagree...you haven't driven my car. Why wouldn't it make a difference? Maybe it was the bypass along with the lid that made the difference. The plenum is much cooler and it pulls harder. That's all there is to it and thats all I have changed on my setup.
I have no intent of making others angry, i'm just chipping in :blueangel:
This is a darned funny thread. I don't have an open air lid and I was even seriously thinking about adding one until I read this and similar posts.
I think it's like living close to a railroad track or an airport. It sounds really loud at first when the trains and jetliners come rolling through, but gradually you don't even hear them anymore because you get "baked" on it psychologically.
I liked what my man above said about "changing the air in his tires." It's the little sharp quips and jabs like this that make the Forum so priceless.

I noticed the difference in low RPM torque, which obviously wouldn't make a difference at the drag strip. I don't see any difference in the ZR-1 probably because I never drive it at low RPM....:) I guess the only way to know for sure is to go to the dyno and look at the before and after curves....
I haven't done anything to mine except put a K&N Filter in it. :yesnod: I don't know if I am just keeping it as stock as possible or waiting to see what changes I can make that will make a difference. I guess I am gonna tackle the plugs and wires pretty soon, Mine are stock and with about 55,000 it may not hurt. You know if you get that bottled air from up North, in the higher altitudes, for your tires its much lighter.
