Default Mercon vs Dexron

I am planning to have my atf changed. Is Mercon compatible with Dexron III which my owners manual says to use. I have been to two places sofar, and they want to put Mercon in it, but I know Mercon is for Ford and Dexron is for GM. I just want a pan drop and filter change, no flush. Thanks for any info.

Do it yourself. It's not difficult at all, just messy.

Default consider buying at dealer, consider avoiding synthetic

hthebeard,

I've noticed that finding pure Dexron III is difficult, most seem to carry newer chemical compositions which are Dexron IV/Mercon (suposedly works with both).

Perhaps the places you talked to, were implying the combo products.

Reminder, sometimes a newer rating (e.g. III -> IV) is not better as its chemical composition might not be backward compatible (e.g. should not use synthetic in early C5 manual transmissions because of 'paper blocking rings, or DOT 4 brake fluid is some aspects is not compatible with/when DOT 3 is specified).

Alternatively, you might be able to buy the Dexron III from a dealer and have your local shop do the change with it...

Thanks. I did find a shop that still carried Dexron III in bulk and when the tech pulled the pan everything looked very clean, like maybe it was serviced not too many miles ago. But it does shift a lot smoother now.
