Well I put the SuperRam on that I got and what a PITA it was. I had to use the stock lower intake due to the one that I have is set up for a LT1 and wont work on the L98.
It looks pretty BUT runs like crap! Dont know why and really dont care due to the entire engine is coming out and being replaced in soon. I will figure it out then.
ohh sweet memories....Glad i already GOT that T-shirt
runs like crap? explain...
Well when I first got it running it missed like a rev limiter at 1500 RPM. Disconnected the EGR and that went away.
NOW, it idles smooth sometimes and then sometimes it will start to surge at idle and die like you shut the key off. I have to keep the R's at about 800 with my foot to keep it from doing this.
Driving down the road at 70 it runs good. It does not act like it has a miss or anything HOWEVER it seems like it has ALOT less power than the stock TPI and under HARD (wide open throttle) it seems like it is running rough and not a smooth acceleration through the RPM range.
Dont get me wrong, it is drivable and that is the reason that I have not really took the time to figure it all out and the fact that it will ALL be coming apart in a few weeks.
I am guessing that it is a vacuum leak at the lower intake due to I did not use the ACCELL that goes with it due to it will not bolt up to the heads.
Looks nice, to getting some experience working on the SR.
Thanks! I am just wondering if it is really worth all the trouble. I only want a 300 - 350 HP motor when I do the engine swap this winter. I am beginning to think I should have just stayed with the TPI lol
All right. Time for some really dumb questions. I am a long ways off from engine mods, but the factory horsepower is pretty disappointing, so I think it will be inevitable. What does a mod like this cost? How much HP do you really gain? Do you literally just swap the TPI for the SR, or are there many other modifications that are required. Sorry, Im learning as I go.
BTW, im driving an 86 vert. Im told it has the aluminum heads and the factory plate says it produces 265 HP. The air box is open and the exhaust has been opened a little so I am expecting somewhere in the neighborhood of 266 HP. Giddy Up.
Also curious if there is something that you can do to cover up the distributor. Do they make a plate or something like they do with the TPI set up or do you just get stuck looking at it?
Oh yeah--one last thing. IF you do a mod like this, do you have to have it specially tuned? IF so, what does that consist of?
BTW looks pretty nice in your car.

Sounds like you do have a vacuum leak. How did the EGR part of gasket match up to the base and runner ?? Spray some starting fluid down there.
I agree this is prob where the problem is and that is why I have just over looked it and lived with it until I pull the engine in a couple weeks.
I have a Machine shop that is willing to redrill the SR base that I have so that it will fit my L98 and weld up the TL1 holes for 200 bucks. I wonder if it would be better to just buy a new one that is already for a L98. Anybody need a SR lower intake for a LT1? lol
After my SR install, it took me probably a week of eprom tuning to get it to run decent.
I've retuned it 195 times to date.
In my case, my previous tune may have been over-tuned to my old set-up, which may have contributed to some of the early teething problems.
The SR can present some challenges, but can also be made to run well.
I went from a stock base, with ported 3" siamesed SLP runners to a bigmouth base, new lifters and SR uppers. I had assumed my previous tune would be pretty close since I only expected the SR to change things up top above 5000 rpm or so.
I was wrong. All that plenum volume makes the SR behave differently. My Comp 503 camshaft may have also lead to some tuning complications, but it was running fine on the previous intake set-up, so I can't really blame it on the cam.
I've never tried it with a stock bin, so I can't say how one would perform, but from my experience, it requires some tuning to get it right.
