Default Battery Tender Plus - which one

Before I buy, please help out this mechanically challenged individual.

For a C6 vette, is the Battery Tender Plus 12v the right version to get?

Thanks much,
S

AUTOMATIC BATTERY FLOAT CHARGER

Skip the aggravation of a jump-start by keeping your vehicle's battery fully charged. Use on 12V batteries while in storage or during cold weather. The floating circuit maintains a full charge without overcharging. Includes automatic safety shut off.
Leads: 10 ft. overall length

ITEM 42292-1VGA

$7.49
HF used to sell an automatic charger. Now they sell the above which in bold letters says is NOT a trickle charger but a float charger. What's the difference? The automatic charger I had used to charge up and then switch to a low level charger to keep the battery fully charged.

I am a EE and in my opinion, Mr. Killebrew's recommendation is WRONG! A battery tender keeps your battery fully charged and prevents lead sulphate from forming on the plates. Let your battery sit for a month before charging it (and 20 minutes on an alternator may or may not charge it up all the way) and you will have lead sulphate on the plates and eventually you will have a fully sulphated battery and then a door stop in the Spring. Buy a battery tender and experience normal battery life.

Most would consider it sacrilege to disagree with Gordon Killebrew, but in this instance, as usual, JFB is dead-nuts on with his advice, and Gordon's advice (presuming this is an accurate quote) should be disregarded.

Make sure what you buy is a true maintenance, or float charger, that will not overcharge the battery. You do not want a trickle charger for this application.

I terminated my float charger with a cigarette lighter plug, and simply plug it into the lighter socket when I want to connect it. It doesn't get any easier than this.

Live well,

SJW

Pig tail connection makes it an easy on-off for use all the time IMO otherwise you defeat its purpose.
