I have pulled the wheel hub. My question is on lubrication. The parts store said to pack it with grease but I think that is full of something brown. But the instructions for the new wheel hub said to use grease but it was not clear on the amount or type.
That brown stuff is old wheel bearing grease! Go to a auto part store and get a name brand wheel bearing grease like Valvoline. Avoid buying the Wal Mart, etc type grease. You should thoroughly clean all the old grease out of the bearings and repack them with grease. There is a technique to packing the grease into the bearings. Send me a PM if you want more info on this.

My wheel hub is a self sealed kind which is why I am confused on the grease. I wish I could have just done the bearings like in my old 71 firebird. Sp instead of $20 a wheel, it was $170 a wheel.
C4 wheel bearings are sealed. You can't grease them. It is impossible to take them apart without destroying the bearing races (which are plastic). If you have a wheel bearing problem, you just have the replace the entire hub.
Money saving tip: 4th gen Camaros/Firebird (93-02) use the same front wheel bearings, EXCEPT the bolt holes are threaded. Usually the f-body hubs are cheaper, and you can just drill out the threads. The f-body hubs also all have ABS, and even if you have an early car with no ABS, they work just fine.

Ahhh... Thanks for the info. I replaced both the front hubs, but I still have some rear sway so I will replace the rear tomorrow. Expensive but still a lot less than a car payment and I love my car...
Just did the rears on my 89 two weeks ago.....I was starting to sweat bullets reading the first couple posts here. The only grease I saw was in the right rear hub that fell apart as I was taking it off!
