Default Winter storage question?

I bought a auto-float charger for winter battery storage and my question is, Should I disconnect the teminals from the battery before hooking up the charger or is that not required? Allentown Ernie.

Mine is connected to the battery terminals with the terminals connected to the battery. I've been doing this for years with nothing but positive results.

I was told that it is best to disconnect the terminals. Constant charging could damage the alternator or other electrical components.

Using a Smart Tender monitors the charge and only charges when a drop is noticed.

My car is on a smart tender 365 days a year.
My battery is now 5 years old.

You are correct however if you use an old fashion "always charging" type system.

Even with the ignition off there is an approx draw of 5 ma on the battery. The battery tender makes up for that and any other draw from corrosion or battery age. A trickle charger does not go that low, so in reality a trickle charger will overcharge and damage your battery. I have in the past used a 12v power supply from some electronic device on my boat batteries and never had a problem.

a Battery Tender is a brand of a technology known as a battery float charger.
This is the 21st Century version of a trickle charger that adds a microchip to monitor current leakage and matches the charge rate to the current leakage to ensure the battery is always at 100% charge.

Leave the battery attached to the car and clip on the float charger leads.

I leave mine completely hooked up because it's a good idea to start the car every few weeks just to keep the seals soft and take tension off of valve springs in the open position.

Yup, i start mine every few weeks and let it run. Maybe take it for a ride down the street just so the tires get a little bit rotation.

No need to disconnect the battery from the car.

I terminated my float charger with a cigarette lighter plug, and simply plug it into the lighter socket when I want to connect it. It doesn't get any easier than this.

Live well,

Default winter storage.

Thanks fellas, I hooked up the charger with the battery still connected. I am sure it will be just fine. I feel bad already because I will not drive my car during the winter months. Oh well, It could be worse. At least I own a " 90 Quasar blue beauty" to drive in the spring. Most people aren't that lucky. They don't know how much pleasure owning a C-4 gives us " lucky Vette owners". Allentown Ernie.
