Hey All,
I am going to change my own oil after having the dealership do it for the last year and a half.
I know the owner's manual says to use 5W-30 but I live in Florida so cold is not an issue. Should I use 5W30 or 10W30?
I have been putting 10W30 in my Blazer and never worried about it but I want to make sure my car gets the best of everything. I am going to use Mobile 1. Any suggestions?
Does it matter if I change what the car is used to?
It's a 96 LT1.
Thanks
Will 10W30 work? Sure...But if you don't want to worry about it why don't you just use what your Owner's Manual tells you to use? GM engineers spent quite a bit of time/funding in research and development to come up with the oil specifications for the Corvette. If you think you can come up with a better solution on your own...Hey its your engine, your Vette and your own science experiment. I just use the oil specified by GM. JMHO.

Thanks for the reply RIISITAS, but too late. I just put 10W30 in.
I really don't think it's a science experiment. The owner's manual lists both oils as suitable. I don't drive in anything below 60 degrees.
I was hopeing for some insight, that's all.
I change my oil every 3000 or so even with the Mobile 1.
If I notice anything funny I will change it out right away but I can't see why it would be a problem.
I have always used 10W30 in my Chevys down here and it seems to work well.
Anyone else have an opinion?
The GM Engineers suggest an oil that can be used anywhere in the country. You could use 20w30 Mobile1 if you could find it, but if you visit me in New Hamphire in November stick with the 5w30.
I live in Texas & I only use 10W-30W Mobile 1 because of the heat, I have never had any problems, you shouldn't either.
I live in Vegas and travel quite often out West through the Death Valley area in summer. Mobil 1 5W30 works great as any fully synthetic oil should. No advantage is shown in the owner's manual for 10W30 in hotter temperatures. In fact the 1996 Corvette owner's manual states on page 6-13 paragraph 1 line 1 "As shown in the viscosity chart, SAE 5W30 is best for your vehicle. However you can use SAE 10W30 if it's going to be 0 degrees F (-18 degrees C) or above." SAE 5W30 may be the preferred choice of GM due to the combination of it's energy conserving and all weather properties which are superior to to those of SAE 10W30. So it seems SAE 10W30 is the second best choice. It's all personal choice of course and I suppose for some second best is good enough. My personal choice is the preferred oil specification given by GM and I've had great luck with it. Either choice should provide good service for your engine.
