Default How do you remove automatic shift ****?

I am replacing the automatic shift **** on my '87 coupe. How do I take the old one off? I did a search that had multible threads but didn't really answer my question. Is there a clip behind it or something? Thanks in advance.

If I remember right---
Pry the top button off with a flathead screwdriver.
You will see a round retainer clip wrapped around the shifter, as in the pic below.
Its a little tricky to get off and on.
After thats off, then screw the shift **** off.

Using snap ring pliers on that little clip underneath the **** makes it easy to remove (at least on an 85).

a pair of snap ring pliers is needed to do the job easiest with no cursing.

The plastic button comes out with a thin screwdriver by prying it up. Then remove the snap ring and pull the **** off.

Cup your hand over the **** when removing the clip so if it slips off of the snap ring pliers you can find it. Believe me the snap rings can find tons of places to hide when they go for a flight. These are much easier to remove then a standard shift ****.

That's why they are called "Jesus" clips. If you don't cover the shift **** with something, your next words are "OH Jesus, were did that damn thing go!!!!" I've had good luck working through a slit in a plastic baggie.
