Default Navigation install

A member asked me about my nav install. Rather than me type all this for one person I figured I start a thread for all to read.

The install wasn't too bad. The only thing I had to modify was behind the radio, I had to cut out some of the plastic with a rotozip. After you remove the plastic you'll need to cover the metal brace behind to radio so it doesn't rub and cut through any wires. I used a self sticking felt sheet that is used for cutting and putting on the bottom of chair legs so the floor doesn't get scuffed. Double check first because I'm just going off my bad memory but I'm pretty sure the vss is a dark green/white wire, and the grey/blk wire is illumination in the headunit harness. power always, power with ign, pwr antenna, and antenna need to be taken from the cdm (mine was in the trunk). Ground I got from the front passenger sill where other factory stuff was grounded. I permanently grounded the emergency brake wire so nothing is locked out. On an auto I think the reverse wire is green on the shifter switch. I put the gps antenna under the removable vent plastic on the top center of the dash. I also installed the ipod controller. I place the small box under the dash pad above the info display and ran the wire to the center console. The display is easy to read even with the top down. The glare in the pictures is just the camera flash. I used a metra 993051 dash kit.

I highly recommend a pair of gloves when doing this. After the install my hands looked like I fought a cheese grater. Solder all connections. It will take longer but will save you from having to take everything apart twice.

Nice install,
just a hopeful question, were you able to use the stock bose speakers and amps, or did you have to replace all the wiring and speakers?

I didn't have to. I wanted to. I wanted the sound of a new radio not the old bose unit and I wanted to be rid of any future problems. The number one reason the radios fail in our cars is the bose amp capacitors fail. It wasn't that hard to do. Just run some 16 gauge speaker wire from the new headunit to each speaker.

Nice piece of work. Lacking your resources, (money, expertise, etc) I will just stick my Garmin in the windshield.

what about the tilt function? Can the screen still tilt out fine for CD/DVD loading? I'm thinking about doing this in the future, but that's my only concern. Thanks.

click the last picture. it's a video. the shifter can't be in park when you open it. the screen can also tilt (i think 15°) for better viewing.

I feel it is safer too because you won't get distracted looking down at the GPS.

I'd love to have an in-dash unit like that! So much cleaner and uncluttered without stuff "stuck' all over the dash and windshield!

With the audio, there's very little reason to look at the GPS. I have a laptop model I currently carry in my car and it necessarily sits in the passenger seat or in the rear storage area

I seldom look at it...just listen to the lady

It will give a direction and then give a chime when is the exact moment to do so. It is so accurate you could drive blindfolded. It's kind of scary. A missile using gps could probably be sent right through someones from door it's so precise.

great job Brian. I love seeing great work. anything added to your car and having it look like factory is a job well done. what does a unit like that run? are you happy with the unit? what made you choose that GPS setup?. sorry for all the ?'s, I'm looking to change out my Bose setup too.
TIA -Harry
