Default Overheating

I recently bought my first vette and I love it. However, my 1994 Vette is having some overheating issue when I'm sitting in traffic. Temperatures will reach 225 to 230 and goes back down to 190 to 200 when I'm moving again. I noticed that the secondary fan is not operating and I'm not sure if it's a bad fan or a bad sensor. The fuse looks good and the wiring seems to e connected. Has anyone else experienced this problem or have a recommendation to fix the problem? Email me please. IceDazzlr@yahoo.com

That is pretty normal. I run mine about once a week in the garage and the temps go to 225, the fan kicks on and then drops to 200. It then repeats. You probably have factory 190 thermostat the same as me. Someone else with more experience will come along and explain how to lower the temp if you wish.....jim

Without the ac running the primary fan should come on at 226 and the secondary fan should kick in at 235. With ac on both fans come on regardless of temp. Your car seems normal.

According to GM, it's not overheating at those temps.

No need to worry unless the temp. continues to climb past the 240 mark.

It really helps us if you could fill out your profile. Knowing what year, model, engine, etc. helps us to determine your problem. So when you get a chance, take a few minutes and fill it out.

GM purposely designed these cars to run on the warm side as it helps with emissions. Temps in the 230's is normal, even though it may seem high. You shouldn't see 240 or above, so if you do, then you have a problem. And your secondary probably isn't coming on because your car just may be around that fringe area where it's about to come on, but it's not quite hot enough.

If you want to test it, put your car in the sun, wait for a hot day and let it idle. Watch the temps. If it gets to the upper 230's w/o the secondary kicking in, then there's a problem. Here in Florida, every day is a hot day.

Also, shine a flashlight down into the lower radiator area. This is a known "crap" collection site. If too much crud accumulates here, your temps will definitely needlessly climb. If you do have garbage here and if you clean it all out, it's guaranteed that your temps will drop some.

230 degrees is nothing. I've stepped into a dry sauna hotter than that before! But is was also 40 degrees outside as well!

While your temps are in the normal range, I would suggest you clean the air intake area in front of the a/c condenser and the the area between the radiator and the condenser.

You will be surprised on what you may find in there!

jrzvette and pettvette are right on the money. The operating temperatures are normal. CLeaning the air intake and surrounding areas will definitely help.

These cars were built to run hot to help emissions
No problem unless it goes above about 240-245
