I have an 85 C4 that I have 2 problems that I hope you all can help with.
Problem 1: My right headlight will not close when I turn the lights off. If I open the hood, the light will close. Is this just an adjustment?
Problem 2: I nearly ran out of gas about a month ago. The engine started running rough. After filling the tank, it still runs rough and has lost power. I changed the sparkplugs, but the problem remains. Any ideas?
1) Either an adjustment problem, or a loose wire or flaky motor.
2) If you drained the tank then you might have sucked up the junk in the bottom of the tank; I'd start by changing the fuel filter. If you haven't done it recently it's a good idea just on general principles.
:yesnod: Sounds like a loose electrical connection or a bind in the motor and lifting the hood either tightens the connection or relieves the bind. Carefully examine all the external connections, and you can't find any bad looking connections, start looking inside the motor. Also make sure everything is lined up right and there are nor bent/rusty etc rotating parts.
Definitely sounds like a fuel filter issue, if the chunk you sucked up from your gas tank is big enough it may be lodged on the pickup or in the fuel pump. I'd change the filter first, that is much easier. When I got my car this July I replaced the original fuel filter, boy did that help!
I had the problem with my light when I first got it. Turned out my over flow hose came loose and was keeping the light open. Check for anything that might be in the way.
You've already got good advice on the headlight but if the fuel filter doesn't correct your problem with the poor performance you may have to have your injectors cleaned or replaced and I don't mean the junk in a bottle from WalMart.
The LT1 fuel filter is located on the right hand side frame rail and is a PITA to get to. Make sure you relieve the pressure in the lines before you attempt to loosen any fittings. :chevy
The fuel pump is kept cool by the fuel in the tank. If you let it run real low or out you run the risk of toasting the pump. I've been there, done that. I've needlessly changed 3 fuel filters to later figure out it was a failing pump. Run a fuel pump test before you change the filter. If you turn the key to "on" and if you can hear the pump priming the cold start injector then run a fuel pressure test.
