Hello all,

Well after many years of motorcycles and pick up trucks, I have acquired a 87 blue on blue coupe. Yes this is my first car, lol. In fact the corvette is the only car I have ever lusted after all others are just trash on wheels. Sorry for that, but it is the way I feel.

Anyway, the 87 has 60K original miles on it. Interior was show room, exterior is grand, no dings, etc.

I will post some photos soon.

I do have one concern, the shims on the upper control arm (A arms some call it). There are about 3" of shims on both right and left side. Is this normal? Looking at it, I would suspect that a block spacer should be there with only 2 or 3 shims to obtain a 1.25 degree angle on both front wheels. I know the spec says to go to 0 degree, but from pick up truck builds for speed, I would always have the front wheels at ~ -1 degree. This will allow for a quick bounce back to straight, but it is tough on the power steering. What is the general thought on this?

Anyone.

Also, anyone know a good shop in the Monterey or Santa Cruz California area that can do great suspension work?

Get the FSM (Helms) : Learn to use the Forum Search function (Archive posts), and start reading, thats the best way to learn your way around.

I guess I have missed something, What is FSM? Most likely a simple answer.

FSM = Factory Service Manual. It is put out by Helms and is the bible. It is model year specific and comes in two versions; white cover, which is a preliminary version and is not really much help, and the red cover which is what you should look for. They are available directly through Helms (I don't have their web site hendy) or can be found on EBay or the parts for sale section of this forum. I know the early year C4 versions were one book and the later years are two but I'm not sure when the change occurred.
They cost about $100.00 but you might be able to find used ones for less. If you plan to do any work on your car I suggest you get the FSM before you ever pick up a wrench. The price of the books is well worth it even if you only intend to do routine maintanence. I've even lent mine to my mechanic when he was doing a major repair.

As far as the search function, yes, learn to use it, but don't be afraid to ask questions here as well.

Welcome to the mod madness. But I must disagree with your statement about all other cars being trash on wheels. The FSM can be frustrating at times (it's like two big phonebooks) but it should be your first mod. Put it in the bathroom and read it while taking a dump.
