When I was looking for my first vette years ago I knew I wanted a C3 but there was a used red 84 coupe close by that was forsale. I never really cared for the C4's up until that point.

I went and test drove that 84 and was really inpressed! It might have only had 205 hp but I agree, it felt like alot more. It had about 100,000 miles on the clock but ran like a scalded dawg. I passed on that car but it really openned my eyes to the C4 line. I later snagged a 89 which we drive the snot out of.

Don't let anybody dog ur car. If you like it. That is all that matters!

Son,at 17 horsepower should not be an issue with you.
Don't listen to other people, and have fun driving your car.I'm pretty sure the young chicks will care less about hp,and more about you.

First off, if "Vette Guys" are telling you this, tell them to check themselves as "real Vette guys". Most of us around here are "real Vette guys' and dont bag on 84 owners.......or any other Vette owners for that matter. Remember the first 1953-1955 Vettes were straight 6 cylinder cars with 150hp. Now, you need to give your first born child and a brief case of money to have one in your garage.

I have news for ya kid, the fact that your 17 & already a Vette owner puts you leaps & bounds ahead of most 17 year olds & many adults who only dream of owning ANY Vette at all.

Drive & shine your Vette & be proud!

Hey, I know where this kid is coming from. 11 years ago when I bought my first Vette I was ragged on because it was a shark. I was told that "REAL Vettes were no longer made after 1967." When I had engine trouble with my 70 these same guys told me to ditch the "disco mobile" and get a C5. They scoffed again when I bought my wife an 85. Some folks just don't get it, and never will.

Don't worry about trying to find "good things" to say about your car to counter what ignorant people say.

The best thing about your '84 is that it's yours! The fact that you have any Vette at 17 years old is a major plus. Hell how many of us had Vettes for a first car? I would have killed for an 84 Vette as a first car. (granted it would have been a 6 year old car at the time, but even a low power 76 would have been a killer first car.)

Like the other guys said, stick around here and talk to real Vette people. Glad to have you on board.

Thanks alot guys you are all the best. I got the car because my grandfather started DeFelice Chevrolet way back. He then left chevy in 84 to take on oldsmobile. When he left he took the 84 vette with him. Now after he passed away my uncles and my father own the business and it is once again a chevy dealership and almost the top corvette dealer in NJ! I grew up aorund vettes since i was little and was a big fan of the stingray. Now im in love with the Z06 and I get to go for test rides in htem a lot. I got the 84 when i was 13 to fix it up but I never really looked into this vette so I didnt know much about it. Now its all fixed up and I do love it. One of the mechanics at the dealership is known to be one of the top corvette mechanics around here. If you know him his name is Tommy Michaelcormick i think thats how you spell it but he is going to help me do some minor mods with the vette. I know at 17 i shouldnt be looking for more power but I race motocross and always go to Atco and Englishtown to watch races so I love speed. Thanks a lot again guys.

You're a bit farther south in NJ than I am, but I have heard of your family's dealership. Konner Chevy is the big Vette dealer we have up north.

Glad to hear that the 84 is a "family car." My old man sold his 86 Vette 3 months before I got my learners' permit.
Hold on to that car, you won't regret it.

Its a 1984 Corvette with heritage against a 2006 ( +/-2 years ) Cobalt SS. You cant compare the two cars...apples and oranges. There is 22 years of Corvette technology that has made its way into the Cobalt. And isnt the Cobalt the rebadged Cavalier? Talk about heritage.

I also heard that the 1984 Corvette was faster than a 1984 Cobalt. Since there wasnt such a thing. The comparison then is a 2006 Corvette against a 2006 Cobalt. It sounds like sour grapes to me.

Nobody mentioned the crossfire/TPI conspericy? They basically detuned the 84 by making the intake manifold ports small so it would be slower than the new 85 TPI vette.

By the way that was your grandfathers 84 have a little respect for him, sounds like a great guy. I have seen an article in GM high tech with a 84 vette with nitrous go high elevens, under $3000.

You have to remember the Corvette (no matter what the year) is a state of mind. The 84 Corvette was a major style change for the car and there are many great things about the car, suspension, electronic dash, solid panel removable roof motorized headlights. The horsepower number of the engine is not the most important thing. Look back at the year the car was made it was the KING of the auto market.

I am sure the girls in your school do not know the horsepower of the 84 Corvette, all they know is that is a Corvette.

Well, you've had some time to sort through some of the answers now, and it's obvious you feel a little better about your beloved Corvette.

Now, let's address the issue of other Corvette owners bagging on the 84 (or any other year for that matter). I'm going to go out on a limb and say that 98% of all Corvette owners appreciate all Corvettes for what they were in their heyday, and the legacy they helped perpetuate. The other 2% are playing a game. The game is called "mine is better".

People generally play "mine is better" for one simple reason....they're insecure. They validate their own manhood, importance, whatever by degrading others....through whatever means available....be it their job, car, home, significant other, etc. Folks who are secure in themselves, no matter how extravagant or modest, don't feel the need to do this. Quite the opposite in fact. These folks feel better by complimenting and encouraging others.

So...if you encounter someone who's playing "mine is better"....remember this...it takes two to play. Simply ignore them, and you render the game ineffective.

Enjoy your car son.....Took me 34 years to get my first Corvette. Which I've had for 10 years now....which just happens to be an 84. I still love it as much as the day I brought it home. Don't let anyone take away from the enjoyment you get from the car.

Cheers.

Here's a link that may give you some info you didn't know about your '84.

The Historical Notes at the bottom may make you feel better about your 24 year old Corvette and what it did for sports cars in general.

How many people still maintain their 1984 Civics or Preludes?
The question here is,when was the last time anybody's seen an 84 Prelude,Civic?

Theres nothing wrong with an 84 Corvette period. Different times called for different cars and the crossfire is really dependable, it's like that rabbit, keeps going and going. When people tell you you can't make it faster there wrong, i've modded my 84 and went from 205 to 300HP and it's still dependable. I've raced it (at the track) and have many trophie's from racing it, the fastest time I ever got though was 13.8 sec. it was a good day. Being that your 17 years old please don't get caught up in the street racing thing because all you will do is hurt yourself or someone else and loose your car that you say you love so much. Take care of your 84 because theres not to many well taken care of 84's left.

heres a pic of mine....

when i was 17 i had a 1974 corvette l48 with 195hp and in 1987,88 everything was faster mustang gt, iroc-z, etc... but it was different and i had a very nice vette. all the kids my age thought my father was rich or i was doing something illegal. i only paid 7k for the car and kids were driving around in new mustang gt's, iroc-z's, trans am's that were probably over 15k. be proud to have a vette at 17, i was and enjoyed every minute of it. good luck and be careful it's alot of car for a 17 yr old. pat

The 84 is a beautiful Corvette, very special in its own way. Its a first year of the C4 series and also the car of the year award model and will be considered a Classic next year. The same engine is in the 82 which is never a issue on a purchase. The Cobalt is a economy performance car like the Subaru,Mitsubishi and all the rest of the little ricers. Sure they are faster from a stop light, but owning a piece of History puts the Corvette on a whole different level.

Default 84 vette

I owned a 67 vette which was modifed to the hilt a 454 big block sold it after 32 years and brought this 84 , the 84 is not a 454 ground pounder but ther is still plenty of bang for the buck and it gets 26.3 miles per gallon at 68 miles per hour the big block got 18 in overdrive , if you put your foot into it maybe 4 miles per gallon and with gas prices , Iwill take the 84 well built car and check out the parts prices they are most likely cheaper that any colbolt parts , want a slow vette try out a 77 I did brand new in 77 that thing did not get out of it's own way .
