This is a tip for all the people having trouble deciding on what to do with there cracked and damaged dash tops. Mine is a 84,and was in bad shape when I bougnt the car.I tried 2 different Plastic Caps that are advertised as a quick and cheap fix. Well the key word is cheap...and they warp and fade,in over 6 mo to a year...Saw several on E Bay,for $150 -$250.....but their used and I already have a used one,Plus someone just wrote on here of a bad experience from E Bay on this exact item,it was cracked when he received it...The local upholstery shop wants $150 to recover in a foam backed material, but that doesn't appeal to me so ....So I think there are two options....1} find a used one at a swap meet, where you can lay your hands on it and really check it out...2]...Buy NEW...
The dash top was the easiest of all the dash pieces to do. Its all flat. The only hard part was the sharp angles closest to the side view mirrors. You have to heat the material up a bit so it is pliable and forms to that edge.
If I went back and did it again though, I would use a flatter black and also put a layer of thin felt under it to pad it a little better.
Other than that, its really very easy and cheap to do.
I forgot to mention, I have two nasty cracks in my dash, one is split the entire length and it really doesn't show up at all after it was covered. Adding a layer of felt would make it completely invisible.
