Default Scraping Noise

So i was going to take me Vette out for run up to a super bowl party in the Poconos yesterday. Well when i started the car up I got a loud scraping noise coming from what seems like the transmission. Once i took the car out of park and starting rolling the sound went away. I then parked the car and restarted it, the scraping came back. Once again i put the car in drive and it went away after rolling about ten feet. Anybody have nay guess to what this is. I didn't want to chance anything so i didn't drive the car. I did have the tranny rebuilt last year so I hoping nothing went bad with that. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Tony

might be the U-joints.... when I first heard mine going bad it sounded like the brake pads were scraping metal somewhere...

I don't know what those parts are but it sounds expensive to fix.

That involved replacing the inspection plate (cheap and easy). Still don't know if it applies here. Others need to chime in.

with the U-joints going, the sound does go away after you start rolling.... in fact if you don't accelerate hard or launch hard initially you might not hear any noise... however if you launch the car hard from a standing stop and you get the scraping sounds, I suspect its the joints...

It sounds like he was hearing the noise before putting the car in drive. That would take u joints out of the picture. Wouldn't it?

Once i took the car out of park and starting rolling the sound went away
I did have the tranny rebuilt last year
Sounds like the inspection plate bolts may have loosened with time or cold weather, causing a slight scraping of the TC (torque convertor) to inspection plate.

Its free to jack up the car at home and inspect, grab, and shake those components...
If nothing is found like that; grab a socket(s), extension, and ratchet and make sure all the bolts are tight on the inspection plate, bell-housing, and other tranny components while the engine is NOT running.

THEN

If nothing is found like that...and...If you are experienced enough:
make sure you have the car properly lifted and secured on jack-stands, wheels chocked, e-brake on and start the car in park...see if you can pin-point the noise and go from there.

If you arent that familiar with the above, have a friend that is experienced come help, maybe bring it to a local mechanic or friend with a lift to pin-point the noise...
or...
if after having it on jack-stands and nothing is found, call and ask the tranny shop that built it to send a tech to try and diagnose it at your house before putting it on the wrecker...most tranny shops have wreckers to bring cars in. Most around here will send an apprentice tech to diagnose the prob before actually taking the car back to the shop.

My 89 had a scraping sound coming from the left rear. I had to take it in for a inspection and the told me the rear wheel bearing was bad. I replaced both rears. When I first heard that sound I suspected a wheel bearing....not a u-joint, I always thought a bad u-joint made a clunking sound.....or is that only with a auto tranny?

I wondering if this could possibly be a starter issue. Since the problem only happens when i first start then car the goes away after about 10 feet of driving.

That would be easy to check. Just engage the starter again briefly after it has started and listen (note-that is hard on the starter drive and ring gear).

doesn't sound to be a rotational noise from the u-joints since he is not moving the car. like others have said, it sounds like something in the area of the flywheel/inspection plate. I have seen rust built up on the flywheel on cars that sit more than driven. a quick inspection with the car running and inspection plate off might give you a clue. it might not even have to be running.

P.S. check also your flywheel bolts since you said you had your tranny worked on recently. putting a load on the tranny will make the noise go away if those are not torqued all the way.

I am going to guess the starter motor is staying engaged. Starter is passenger side of motor (rear of course). Sound like where the noise is coming from?

triangular/half moon shaped cover that's at the bottom between the trans and the engine. you remove this to access the torque converter bolts.
