I took my bulb assembly to Napa and for a few bucks I got new bulbs and plastic bulb holders.

FWIW, The 882's are very bright AND develop a lot of heat in the process.

After repairing my cluster, I converted the lites to the 194's.
These are not as bright, but very legible in day light.

Cheaper to replace, and easier to find.

Here are the facts:
From 84 to 88 Delphi installed a halogen lamp assembly, in 89 they used a Stanley Xenon lamp because the light tubes were melting in the clusters. All clusters from 89 forward, when serviced, should switch to the Xenon lamp & socket. FWIW 194's will short out the power supply, as they draw too much power, The newspaper is also a BAD idea.

so much info in this thread, what to choose?

So, Ken- what would you suggest for replacement in '84-'88 clusters?

Use the Xenon lamp assembly in all clusters, retail cost is probably less than $4 each. Just make sure you do NOT mix an assortment of lamps.
