I see that the hood supports on the 84-86 are a scissor type and the newer ones are a gas shock type. Has anybody put the gas shock type on the 84-86? And if so, what was involved? My scissor type is missing.
A few years ago, they started making the scissors support again, and they are readily available (and still not very good). If you have an 84, that's all that will fit. Most 86up (and maybe 85) hoods have the two holes on the driver side of the hood that let you use both the two newer supports. The strut support will fit as long as the hood is drilled, and the bracket kits are readily available, probably the best way to go.
To convert to the later style you need a conversion kit (like $6) and 2 of the small gas shock style supports. I think you could use just one support but it would probably be easier with both. BTW a replacement scissor support will you run you about $100.

I replaced my button lock strut with the newer style. Used it's upper mount and the ball stud from lower mount was installed into the stock lower mount. Sure makes lifting the hood, a whole lot easier !!
Those with scissor style will need to use the complete lower bracket of the newer style.
