Default Antenna Problem

Removed my stereo plate while cleaning interior of my 1994 corvette. Reattached the plate. Went to car wash and realized my antenna wouldn't go down. (It worked fine before). Told the car wash guy I didn't want to go through wash because I just realized something was wrong with my antenna, and the car wash would break it. He told me I had to go through because there were about 4 cars behind me. I went through, and of course the antenna got bent (and is now dangling). The car wash agreed to pay for my antenna, but they claim my motor was already broken.

Now, as far as I know, my motor worked fine until that day. I figured out the reason my radio didn't work -- and thus, my antenna wouldn't go down -- was because I didn't reattach the stereo face on securely. Once I reattached the stereo correctly, the radio worked fine. But, now the motor is broken. Perhaps it's just a coincidence. Or, is it possible that the bent antenna somehow stripped the motor or something?

Did you try pushing down the antenna before entering the car wash? Why were you taking a Corvette through a car wash in the first place? High Pressure Water and Corvettes don't mix - unless you want to discover where your car is leaking.

Actually, the car wash guy tried to push it down. To answer your other question... because I'm stupid I guess. :0 I didn't know that high pressure washes were not good for corvettes.

It's not that a high pressure wash is bad for your Corvette it's just generally, we don't go through them unless we are in search of leaks. And I doubt anyone here, including myself, thinks you are stupid - you did buy a Corvette.

Corvettes Rock! And, you're right, I'm not really stupid. (I said that tongue in cheek). I just live and learn. Just wish I hadn't had to learn this lesson the hard way. One thing's for certain though, I'll never take my corvette through a car wash again.

So, do you know if it's possible that the motor broke when the guy tried to push the antenna down? Doesn't sound logical, but thought I'd ask. I know the motor worked before the car wash fiasco. Probably can't prove it, but I was just hoping to find an explanation (other than coincidence) for the motor to stop working same day as car wash damaged the antenna.

Doubtful that the motor was damaged when he attempted to push it down, it is more likely that the cord broke. From what I recall about Power Antennas, there is a thick plastic cord that pushes up and pulls down the antenna, like a thick solid straw. Motor is probably fine but I don't know if the cord only can be replaced, but it's my guess that it can be. A new Power Antenna is not that expensive. Do some research though and see if a part number not intended for a Corvette will work. I once had a Mark III that needed a replacement Power Antenna and the dealer quoted me $170. Odd thing was that the part number was the same for a a Power Antenna for a Torino. When I called the dealer a few days later I was quoted $87 for the Torino antenna. Same part number mind you but asking for an antenna for a Torino instead of a Mark III saved me some cash.

Thanks for the info. I like saving $100. I'll give it a try.
