Default what would I do

If the 88 was mine at this price I would search and find the oil leaks and install new gaskets and seals. If the engine is really worn out, might buy a new GM crate engine, the basic inexpensive one and install it since a total rebuild could be more expensive than a crate engine. I would keep the original 4+3 and see how it functions. Could go for a rebuilt/exchange unit if the original unit is much abused/thrashed. Do not want any two year project sitting in the garage or driveway having to do all the wiring mess and fabrication.
