Default VATS decoder location?

Just received a nice tight steering column from a fellow forum member so I can swap out my loose noodle I have now. Column came with the vats key so thats not a problem. I was wondering if I just put this column in, plug everything in will the vats work with the keys that came with it, or is the chip "reader / decoder" located in the car. If thats the case do I use my old ignition switch and keys in the new column? What I'm asking is where is the vats system actually located, in the car itself or in the column / ignition. Thanks

Propably the easiet way is to get a new vats key. The decoder or module is located in the car, exactly where is dependant on the year. Have your old key read, and have them duplicate the new key on the proper coded vats key. You can also change out the new key lock with the old one, but that's a bit more work.

ZR1, thanks for the quick reply, my car currently has a code 14 resistor, so I buy a code 14 key blank, then have it cut to match the new column ignition and life will be good? If so, sounds much easier then expected. Thanks
