How does the Security System in the 1987 Corvette work? How can you tell if it is working properly?
Lower driver side window, remove ignition key, lock both doors with the button, get out of car and shut the door...is door locked from outside? Now, reach thru window opening and unlock door with button, open door and horn alarm should start honking. To stop it use key and unlock door from outside. ???

This is correct. If the car has been locked with the Power Lock, unlocking the door from inside and then opening the door will set the alarm off. Interesting factoid is that the alarm is only armed via the Power Lock.
This is not an answer to your question, but my opinion. Get one installed at Best Buy or circuit city for $300-$400. You will also be upgraded to keyless entry. Definately worth the money
If it is only armed with the power locks then how does the system work on my 85 with manual locks? It does blink security when the door is open, though I have never tried the process as described above.

My guess would be that a car without Power Locks would arm and disarm the Alarm with the key. Check the owners manual if you have one. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Hey, I have my owners manual, I'll check it. Duh, should have thought of that.
All2kool,

Thanks I never knew that aboout the manual locks. We took delivery of our 1st, '84, Vette in Bayard, Nebrasksa a very small town where fer of the locals had ever seen a VETTE. My friend got it for me and he had it ready for us to drive back to Los Angeles when we arrived. We got in, played with everything and were ready to depart when I discovered the door was locked. You guessed it...couldn't figure out how to turn the DA## horn even tough most all the local folks gathered around to help us. Finally my wife found the answer in the owners manual. My red face matched the paint on that RED Vette!
So when you lock the door with the key, and try to unlock through the window the alarm will go off on a manual lock car. And I guess just using the key in the door to unlock disarms it?
I will have to try this tonight when I get home. Up until this thread I never gave it much thought, but it is bugging me now.
The chip in your ignition key is for VATS. The Alarm and VATS are not integrated with each other but rather separate security features..
I assumed that they were separate; due to the fact the door key does not have the chip. But still; how does the alarm become disengaged by opening the driver’s door?
